The Narrows Guide
The Narrows: What to Expect + Trail Stats + Is It Worth It
If you’ve heard about The Narrows, it’s probably because of the photos. Towering canyon walls, water flowing between them, and people hiking straight through the river.
This isn’t a normal trail. You’re in the water almost the entire time.
That’s what makes it one of the most unique hikes in Zion.
Quick Trail Facts
- Distance: Up to 9.4 miles (bottom up, round trip as far as you choose)
- Elevation Gain: Minimal
- Time: 2 to 8 hours depending how far you go
- Permit Required: No (bottom up route)
- Water Hiking: Yes, most of the hike
What It’s Actually Like
You start at the Riverside Walk, which feels easy and crowded.
Then you step into the river.
From there on, it’s a mix of walking, wading, and carefully stepping over rocks. The water can range from ankle deep to waist deep depending on conditions.
The current matters more than the distance. Some sections are slow and easy. Others make you work for every step.
The deeper you go, the fewer people there are. The canyon walls get tighter, and it starts to feel more remote.
What You Need to Know
This hike changes a lot based on conditions.
Flash flood risk is real. Always check the forecast before going.
Good footwear matters more than you think. Slippery rocks are constant.
A walking stick helps a lot with balance.
And yeah, you’re getting wet. There’s no avoiding it.
Is It Worth It?
For a lot of people, this ends up being their favorite hike in Zion.
It’s not about getting to a single viewpoint. It’s about the experience of being in the canyon itself.
If you go prepared and respect the conditions, it’s one of the most memorable hikes you can do.
If You’ve Done It
Most souvenirs just say “Zion.”
This one is about the trail itself.
If you’ve hiked The Narrows, you know it’s not just a walk. That’s what this pin represents.
