Emerald Pools: Which Trail Should You Do + What to Expect

Emerald Pools: Which Trail Should You Do + What to Expect

Emerald Pools is one of the most popular hikes in Zion, but what most people don’t realize is that it’s not just one trail.

There are three different levels, and which one you choose completely changes the experience.

Quick Trail Options

Lower Emerald Pool

  • Distance: ~1.2 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Time: 30 to 60 minutes

Middle Emerald Pool

  • Distance: ~2 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Time: 1 to 2 hours

Upper Emerald Pool

  • Distance: ~3 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Time: 1.5 to 2.5 hours

What It’s Actually Like

The lower pool is the most accessible. Paved paths, lots of people, and a short walk to a small waterfall. It’s a quick stop and a good option if you’re short on time.

The middle pool starts to feel more like a real hike. Fewer crowds, better views, and a more interesting trail.

The upper pool is where it finally opens up. A larger area, more space, and a better payoff if you’re willing to go a little further.

Which One Should You Do?

If you just want something quick and easy, the lower pool is fine.

If you want something that actually feels like a hike, go to the middle or upper pools.

Most people who stop at the lower pool miss the best part.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, but only if you go beyond the first stop.

It’s not as intense as Angels Landing or as unique as The Narrows, but it’s one of the most approachable hikes in Zion and still worth doing.

If You’ve Done It

Most souvenirs just say “Zion.”

This one is about the trail itself.

If you’ve hiked Emerald Pools, you know which level you made it to. That’s what this pin represents.
